Children often have difficulty with change — whether it’s a big change such as a parental divorce or a small one such as moving from playtime to bedtime. These struggles can show up as behavioral or emotional difficulties such as acting out or anxiety, and sometimes as poor performance in school or temporary changes in social relationships.
In therapy for adjustment and transitional issues, I help ensure that parents are providing consistency in the home. I also use a technique I like to call “transitional storytelling” to help children anticipate and move through change.
