ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (formerly called ADD) affects a child’s focus, activity level, and impulse control. There are three types — inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined.

The inattentive type is characterized by careless mistakes, difficulty paying attention, trouble following through on instructions, poor organization, distractibility, and forgetfulness. The hyperactive-impulsive type shows up as fidgeting, leaving one’s seat at inappropriate times, excessive talking, and interrupting others.

Research shows that a combination of therapy and, when appropriate, medication often best treats the symptoms of ADHD. Therapy frequently focuses on behavioral interventions at home and school, such as behavior charts. Providing consistency and structure is a key component.
